Ching Ming Festival - Every Spring
Olivewood Memorial Park, 3330 Central Ave.

Riverside, CA 92506

Although the normal practice is to honor ancestors in one's direct line, most Chinese pioneers buried in Riverside left no descendants due to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and later extensions. Since 2009, SOCC has organized a public remembrance ceremony at Olivewood Memorial Park every Spring. Our annual public event was halted in 2020 due to COVID-19, but resumed in 2024.

Local historian Harry Lawton identified seventy-one Chinese headstones in Olivewood Cemetery in the 1970s. Today, only seventeen remain. SOCC and other local organizations have created the Olivewood Gravestone Restoration Project to replace missing and damaged Chinese headstones. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support this project. Thanks for your support!

Also known as Double Ninth Festival, Chong Yang is a traditional Chinese holiday and Taoist festival focused on good health and long life. This Fall festival is an opportunity to get outside and enjoy the weather, while caring for and appreciating our elders. The inaugural event in 2016 was held at the home of Richard and Jane Block.
